Career Development

If working at Human Resource Development (HRD) or at Vocational Training program development, training for vocational development means helping individuals to perform according to organizational objectives.

Recent changes in organizations may expand the need for professionals capable of developing human capital. Rapid technological change, globalization, restructured workplaces, labor market shifts and pressure for reduced costs and increased productivity have increased demand for training development professionals.  This is true especially for HRD and on a smaller scale for vocational training.

Positions typically focus on two major areas of concern.

  1. Instructional Design and Development
  2. Computer-based or Distributed Support Services

Responsibilities include planning, development, implementation and dissemination of a variety of distributed learning projects and supported initiatives.  These include curricula, academic courses, academic support courses and tutorials, and self-paced training and learning objects. Many positions will require supervisory responsibility perhaps including for Web Support Services, management of services in the areas of a student/faculty help desk, copyright clearance, and contract experience.

Human Resource Development offers a wide range of roles in the field and a large number of jobs across every kind of business and industry in this country. A 1989 study by ASTD identified roles performed by individuals in this profession.
